Yee Ping Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand

“Yee Ping” is the most colorful northern Thai festival held in Chiang Mai held on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month.

What is the exact date of Yee Ping festival? It depends on the moon cycle in the traditional Thai lanna calendar during Loy Krathong Festival to pay respect to Buddha, which usually takes place in November in the western calendar.

Where does it take place?

The lantern festival “Yee Ping” takes place in the field near Mae Cho University just outside Chiang Mai (San Sai) which begins with Buddhist chanting and meditation. It was so peaceful. FYI, it is hour-long religious ceremony, after a few hours you might find yourself napping on the field 😛

How to get there?

I think renting a motorbike in Chiang Mai could be the best idea as the traffic is terrible due to thousands and thousands people who go the same way to join this amazing event and not many spaces to park cars. If you don’t want to get stuck on the road and miss the best event ever, trust me renting a motorbike is the solution. For those who aren’t confident to ride a motorbike on the highway, there are “Songtiew” public transportation in Warorot Market in Chiang Mai.

Did I pay fee to get in?

No but I was only allowed to use their lantern inside this event which costs 100 Baht ($3.5). It was reasonable price for gaining this incredible experience.

What time did it start?

Around 6 PM. Getting there early will allow you to find the good place to sit and chill. Getting there late, and you could miss the whole thing!

Hungry?

There are plenty of food stalls; Northern food, BBQ, snacks and drinks. Don’t worry your stomach will be safe here.

After waiting for a few hours, finally we were asked to light up the candles on stands throughout the field. Then it was time to light our lantern “Khom Loy”. That was the moment I have waited to see with my own eyes for years and years. So many said they look like luminescent jellyfish in the deep ocean but what I saw, it looked like stars growing around me. Speechless. I got a big smile on my face. I didn’t want it to end. I guarantee that it will be one of unforgettable moments in your life.
