Things to See and Do in Pai – ‘Pai in love’

“Pai” is a tiny chilled out town in northern Thailand’s Mae Hong Son region, near the Burmese border, and only 3 hours from Chiang Mai. If you are looking for a change, Pai is a peaceful village where you can get away from any pressure.

How did I get there?

After having memorable time in Chiang Mai for Lantern Festival “Yee Pang”, I headed to Pai by mini-van from Chiang Mai’s arcade bus station, which only costs 150 baht ($5, 3 hours or so)

Where did I stay?

My choice was a quiet boutique resort surrounded with rice field among mountains called Phu Pai Art Resort. Specially, at night this area was so dark and quiet which I could see millions stars in the sky and hear every movement of nature clearly.

What to see and do?

Pai Canyon (Kong Lan)

Free and easy to access definitely worth popping by to get a great place to see the surrounding mountains and watch the sunset.

Pai Memorial Bridge

A famous WWII Memorial Bridge is made by Japanese, which has a nice view of Pai River.

Pai Hot Springs

Brilliant natural spring baths with good facilities. It is a bit expensive for foreigners’ entrance fee for 200 baht ($6.5). Anyways, after a long day on a motorbike, a relaxing stop in a hot spring could make your day beyond being perfect.

Santichon Village

A small Chinese village where you shouldn’t miss their delicious Yunnan pork knuckle (served with Mantou – a Chinese steamed bun). Anytime I think about it, my mouth starts watering!

Pang Ung

This place is about 1.5-2 hours away from Pai. I don’t suggest you guys to ride a motorbike up to steep hills if you are not a confident driver or your motorbike isn’t in good working order. I recommend one-day trip tour, which costs only 500 baht ($16.5). Why not? Anyways this place completely blew me away. I got there early in the morning while the mist was still covering beautiful lake with mountains in the background. A must place to visit if you come to Pai or Mae Hong Son.

Mor Paeng Waterfall

A lovely waterfall to relax and cool down on hot days. It’s too far to walk from the center of Pai, go by bike.

Where to chill and eat?

Nong Beer

Good tasting Satay and a must eat “Kao Soi” with reasonable price in the center of Pai so why not to give it a try?

Coffee In Love

This café is located in a large well-kept garden on the way to Pai Canyon and the Memorial Bridgem offering an amazing view towards the mountains. It’s a must place to take a break for hot drink and a piece of cake on a terrace with such a terrific view.

Sunset View Restaurant

Excellent northern food on the top of the valley; I could see the sun disappear behind the surrounding mountains. Also the owner is lovely, sweet and friendly served us fruit for free! All in all, wonderful evening!

Spending time in Pai really pleased me again! Do I want to go back there again? The answer is YES YES & YES :)
